Hi there,

I am seriously considering getting some portable studio lighting. I have two flashes - a 580EXII and a Metz Mecablitz 45 CL4. I find that no matter how much I prep for my shots, my flash is either too strong or not enough. Basically the rooms are usually too dark. I recently did a wedding and while I ended up with some good shots, my ratio of good to bad was 1:8 (1 good for every 8 shots), Now I realize that shooting wedding is a whole other game so I want to do more studio work - meaning homes, offices, off-site, etc.

What would you guys recommend in the <$1,000 range? I was looking at Bowens Gemini 200/250/400 series. Looking at used even. Thoughts anyone? Thank you.

Sorry that folks haven't chimed in to answer you question. I'm personally a filmmaker and am not familiar with the technical side of photography flashes and studio set ups. Maybe you could ask Mitch to post a link to your question on his Twitter?

why not learn to use your canon speedlights in manual and remotely? I use a few 580's and some 430's with lastolite ezyboxes and umbrellas and they are great. Fast to put up, fast to use and fast to put down. Granted you not shooting at ISO100 at f11 but I usually manage ISO400 at f4 which is ample for what you need.

I shot an entire board of directors headshots in the summer, I was given 10 minutes, I was done in 7.

Cheers

I dont think you can go too wrong with the Bowens. My dad has a set of bowens used a lot and still going strong since the late 1970s/early 80s - you cannot ask for more than that!

I would suggest you check out the alien bees. Or any of the strobes from Paul Buff. I have some white lightning flash units and I LOVE them! best investment I have ever made !!
