Hey I am just starting this post to see what everyone thinks of making the switch. I am getting more and more tempted. NO transcoding of footage, but the biggest thing for me is the gamma shift in FCP! It drives me mad and I am pretty sure that is non existing in PP. What are everyone's thoughts?

I'm in love with Final Cut Pro... It saddens me to think you want to switch over....

Samuel...

You won't see the gamma shifts in PPro... give it a shot... I think you can download a free trial copy to play with it.

PPro - AE - PPro, no shifts that I've seen yet

PPro - Magic Bullet Looks - PPro, I see no shifts in the UI there either, much easier to get my look the way I want it.

I was on the Planet 5D Chatroom the other day, and had the good fortune to hear from a person 'in the know' about Apple operations. He was sharing that Apple has really placed their focus on iOS and their mobile products, not on their pro-level apps (such as FCP). On the other hand, Adobe is all about pro apps, as evidenced by the number of new features released with CS5. The Mercury engine and native editing of DSLR footage show that they really understand the times.

So yeah, I just dumped $1000 into Final Cut Studio earlier this year. I like it, but am wishing I'd considered CS5 now.

the gamma shift issue is caused by quicktime and not fcp.

3 things to consider

1- make sure fcp compatibility is checked in qt7 prefs

2- do not use QT X for anything, its buggy as hell, if your running SL use QT7

3- the main issue with QT is its rbg conversion for video, use 5DtoRGB ( http://rarevision.com/5dtorgb/ ) and it converts the footage to rgb as it encodes from h264 to prores so you no longer have to rely on QT

It will be interesting to see what the next version of Final Cut Studio has to offer. I used to be pro-FCS, but now I'm neutral to leaning towards PPro and the entire Production Premium Suite. Adobe seems to be getting a lot of things right and has put together a compelling package.

You cant get rid of QTX but you can install QT7 (its on the snow leopard disk) then just set QT7 to handle the video files. Sorted!

Editing native H.264 isn't really the 'pro' way to do things. Yes it saves time getting to the edit but isn't great for complicated effects or colour correction. If you want a fast edit, why not just use iMovie?

Well, don't laugh too much, tho I don't do all that much moviemaking, I use imovie for most of my editing because it is quick and I know how to use it.

but like I said, I'm not doing amazing monster edits :)

First of all, your not compressing further, your actually decompressing the h.264 stream and depending how toy encode to ProRes you can smooth out gamma and fix a few other things while you there (see this post http://forum.planet5...p-colour-shift/ )

As for you laughing at iMovie, whats to laugh at? you want a quick dirty way to edit and thats perfect for the job.

Are you saying my imovie edits are "dirty" ;)

just kidding

It really isn't a bad tool for things that don't need lots of special tricks. At this point, I can edit natively, don't need to convert, output looks good enough for posting to the web etc.

For my needs in doing podcasts and other simple videos, why use a heavy lifting tool when the hammer I have works just fine? :)

My point exactly Mitch. If you want to do something quickly without all the bells and whistles iMovie is a great tool.

Its all about using the right tool for the job and understanding different softwares pro's and con's

i was a Ppro user until i bought a mac, then i installed FCP.
really didnt like it all that much.

i'll just download a trial of CS5.5 until FCP X comes out and hopefully it will either be awesome or obviously not as good as 5.5
